In last knowledge page, we have generally introduced the concept of staic driving method of led screen, and scan driving method of led screen. Knowing this, we'd introduce further of the differences and advantages in its practical application.

Which led screen is better to choose static driving method, and which led screen is better to choose scan driving method? Before answering this question, we'd go back to its feature. Different from the static driving method, for the screen with scan driving method, at the same time, there're only a part of the LEDs turned on. It results that the brightness of scan driving led screen lower than static driving screen. So the answer is very clear: static driving led screen is good for outdoors, which would require a higher brightness under the direct sunlight. There do existing some saying that "nowadays it's no necessary to choose static driving method for outdoor led screens". But we don't quite agree with that. Although the brightness of LED has greatly improved than in past and the scan driving would satisfy the brightness requirement, still we need to know clear another issue is that static driving led screen would have longer lifetime than the scan driving led screen. The reason is very easy to understand - the LEDs on the scan driving led screen flicker much more frequently than the static driving led screen. Just simply imagine, one lamp would easily burn if you turn on and turn off continuously.
Why some led screen manufacturers coach this idea to the clients? COST. The scan driving led screen requires less driving IC.

But that doesn't mean the scan driving method has no advantage at all. The static driving method is very popular for the P16, P20, P25 outdoor led screens, but it's not popular at all for the smaller pitch outdoor led screens and indoor ones. The reason is for the smaller pitch led screens, with the static driving method, the big quantity of driving IC would make the electronic circuit very complex, which would rise the possibility of mulfunction. As well, the power consumption of the led screen would go higher much. So for the indoor led screens and small pitch outdoor led screens, it's better to choose the scan driving method because with so many LEDs, the brightness would finally not a problem, and both the mulfunction possibility and power consumption would greatly reduced.

So as the conclusion, when we make a solution, though the result is possible to be the same with common sayings, we still need to know the reason why. Only in this way, we would have the capability to create new ideas, and make the led screen solution really considerate.

The printed circuit board, i.e. PCB design plays an important role in the manufacture process of led displays. The circuit design reasonable or not, would determine directly the led display quality good or not.

Nowadays in China, most the manufacturers choose the same circuit design of led displays. We think it's normal as the led display technology is very developed and mature. But that doesn't mean all the led displays should be with the same circuit design especially when the clients would install the led displays in harsh environment. So after all, even if one manufacturer adopt the common seen design for one led display order, still they need to know the reason why, and should make certain the design is good for the practical usage. Only in this way, when one client ask the display for harsh environment, the manufacturers would know how to improve the design, and make it suitable to the led display's application.

The circuit board design is very professional engineering field, so we're not trying to coach you all in one short article, it's impossible. But we'd like to share two basic points with you:

1. The Array of Driving IC. We use this name because it's easier to understand. But actually we should call it as the driving circuit board design, especially when refer the concept of "driver and LED board seperated" technology. If we compare the control system as the brain of human being, the driving IC would be just like the "Ganglion". With very tiny current, the driving IC receive the order from control system and control directly the LED's flicker. In this way and from a far distance, people see the video, image, or letters on the led displays.
If the array of driving IC not good at the circuit design, it would influence the brightness of LED. For example, some the technicans find the brightness of one LED module not average, the LEDs at the edge are darker a little than the ones in centre, that's because the "tiny current" of the driving IC "runs" too long on the PCB board, so it "fades" and influent the normal working voltage of the LEDs.
So with this sample, you'd know how important to make the led display circuit design reasonable and good.


2. The Heat Dissipation. We all know that the overheat would influent the LED's attenuation and stability. So it is important to improve the heat dissipation. Most the people understand the function of Aluminum heat sinks and the cooling fans. But actually a good circuit design would greatly reduce the heat of led module itself. So a simple question and comparison is: for a patient, which is better, to eliminate the possiblity of fever? or to find good method to let the fever gone? The answer is very clear.

Actually it refers the array of all components on the circuit board. On the circuit board, there are big quantity of LEDs, Driving ICs. So it is very important to find the best method to array those components in a reasonable way. And only in this way, we would guarantee the heat dissipated efficiently.
Certainly, there are far more factors need to be considered when design the PCB, and actually it is a classification of modern science. We are just showing those two basic factors the engineers of led display manufacturers need to consider, and hope it would inspire your interest in learning more about led displays technology.

As one of the basic requirements of led display factory, antistatic plays an important role in ensuring the led display quality.

The led electronic displays factory should be equiped with good antistatic equipments and devices. Here we will generally take some examples.

Above we listed some typical antistatic equipments and devices of led display factory. But actually the factory should consider far more than those. To create an environment without static harming to the components, the led display factory should control the factory temperature at a suitable value. As well, the equipments should be ground wiring. And all the equipments and devices should be inspected at regular time.

The static would not easily harm the finished led screens, but when the product at the form of components, half finished status, it's very fragile. Especially when in dry weather, the static of human body, of equipments would easily break the LEDs, the ICs. What's worse is those components are not totally damages, but become the hidden problems.

So even with the same quality materials, different led display factories supply different quality products. Each detail would possible determine the quality of one led display.

When produce the led display, the manufacturer should design the current input value to the LED. A low current input would be good to the led screen's lifetime.
And actually it's the very first process, when receive the LED from the material suppliers. The manufacturers would firstly test the LED's characteristics especially the brightness performance. In this way, the manufacturers would determine the current input value. So here's one question why. And the answer is very easy to understand - the led screen brightness could be partly determined by the current input. For the same LED, a higher current input would enhance the brightness higher. So there are some manufacturers buying low quality LED, and improve the brightness of LED display with the method of enhancing the current to the LED. That is very harmful because it would make the LEDs on the led displays fast attenuate, and finally the led display's lifetime would be short.

This kind of "tricky" from some other led display manufacturers has always disturbs our sales department, when in a competition. We always carry on the policy of good quality, but the price we offer could never be lower than some others because we choose only good materials. But our continuous growing with no serious client complaints would prove our principle right.

Now let's go back to the current design of LED display. What's the current value is good? The nominal current to the LED is 20mA. And in practical usage, the maximum current input should not exceed the 80% of the nominal current input. It is well known that the high current input would generate more heat. So the low current input would be good to the cooling of the led display. Especially for the small pixel pitch led displays, the current input should be as low as possible. As well, according to the experience, the RED, GREEN, BLUE LEDs are not accordant in the attenuation speed, and actually the GREEN, BLUE LEDs attenuates faster than RED LED, so the current input to the GREEN, BLUE LED should be even lower than to RED LED.

And now, we could answer another question: in the street, you may see some LED displays appears "red" or "pink" when in white color. That's partly caused by the suppliers' non-considerate on the current input value design - the GREEN, BLUE LEDs have attenuated, but the RED not that much.

At last, and mostly easy to understand is that the lower current input will make the led display lower power consumption. So as a conclusion, the low current led display is good.

In this LED Display Manufacturers Encyclopedia, we shall introduce one process of the led display manufacturing - the LED mixing.
If we show you some LEDs for the LED display production, you would find no visually difference of its out appearance; even we light them on, you would feel them look the same. But just like an old saying "there's no leafs exactly the same in this world", there do exist some differences of the LEDs, though the differences are very tiny. But remember the led display is a visual product which needs very accurate brightness and color, because one led display requires very huge quantity of the LEDs. Once there's any slight difference between 2 areas on the led screen panel, the visual difference would be big and the screen will look awful.

So it is certainly very important to select the LEDs with close wave length and brightness. In additon, we need take further measures to eliminate the visual difference. The LED mixing is one of it.

When the LED display manufacturers receive a bulk of LEDs, they need to mix the LEDs with a special machine to disperse all of the LEDs. And when inserting the LED to the PCB board, the manufacturers need to follow the "rules of dispersion", and for that, the engineers would design a sketch of inserting the LED in advance for the workers to follow.
In essential, the LED mixing is to disperse the LEDs with slight difference on average on the LED display panel. So watching from a viewing distance, the audience would feel no brightness and color difference. So in fact, LED displays manufacturing process need to consider a lot of the rules of human vision.

As the contrary result, if the LED mixing process not accomplished or accomplished not well, the LED display screen would seem brightness and color not accordant - some part of the LED screen are darker, some part of the LED screen are brighter. So we'd say it affects directly the visual performance of the LED display. Without dispersing the LEDs on average, even with very high quality LEDs, the manufacturers could not produce a very good quality LED display.

The perpendicularity control of the LED display manufacturing process is only refer to the DIP type LED, which has 2 leadframes. As the LED is long shape, so when assemble the LED onto the PCB board, the LED must be perpendicular to the PCB exactly. And all the LEDs should be parallel with each other.
The soldering process would determine this, and it would determine directly the led display color and brightness accordance performance.

The manufacturing technique of wave soldering is very important in the led display production process. Either the too high temperature, or the unstable temperature of the wave soldering will directly damage the LEDs, or cause the hidden quality problem, especially for the small size LEDs such as 3mm round or oval LEDs.
To accomplish the manufacturing technique well, we need to ensure 2 factors well done: the temperature and time.
1. The temperature. The suggested preheating temperature would be 100℃±5℃, and not exceed 120℃. The preheating temperaturing should rise stably, and the soldering temperature is 245℃±5℃.
2. The time. The soldering time should not exceed 3 seconds.
Moreover, it is strictly forbidden that vibrate the LED before its cooling down to normal temperature status, because it is possible to make the soldering point loose, and arouse the problem of "missing welding".
The practical process is far more complex than what's written in a tutorial because any led display manufacturing process would require the actual experience of years. A good led display manufacturer must has experienced a lot of failures during it's trial period in labs. With learning from those lessons, the engineers would know how to produce the high quality led displays.

According to the statistics, when the LEDs on the LED display not work well, for 50% the problem happens because of soldering problem. Usually we call this kind problems as "pseudo Soldering", "cold joint", "inveracious Soldering", or "spurious joint".

This is the "headache" of many led display manufacturers, and many clients complain on this. The soldering problem happens on the LED leadframe, IC leadframe, PINs etc. If there is only one component has the soldering problem, it would be not such a big case because you could just simply re-solder that component to solve this problem. And in quite a lot of cases, you just punch the led display panel, the screen may possible work again in normal status.

But if the soldering problem is caused by the led display production technology itself, it would be very serious. Imagine when on the led screen, sometimes the LEDs die on one part and sometimes die on another part, it would be really awful as it's impossible to replace all the components.

Moreover, it is very hard to find out all the "hidden" problem of the soldering.
Some the manufacturers believe this problem could be eliminated with the vibration test before the consignment. It is a helpful method to test but not a helpful method to avoid the soldering problem from the root.

To solve the soldering problem completely, there's no way but to pay more attention to the production technology. When jointing the components, the jointing material should be very well selected, the equipments should be configured with a reasonable parameters, and the workers should be well educated and skilled.

"Low Cost" is obviously an attractive word to clients of any product, all over the world. Especially to those clients who are interested in the products "made in China", in fact, it's one of the most important reasons of locking on "importing from China". As one of the manufacturers in China, sometimes we're not sure if we should be proud of that, or feel the shame. We understand very much the sense in common that as one commodity, the "good price" of led display is important, but a responsible supplier should pay great attention to the quality and service as well. In our concept, good price should be always after of the good quality. But as the dark side of fast growing economic, and drived by the desire of "selling more", many manufacturers and suppliers have put the "low price" on the first place. That has been ruining the reputation of "made in China".

There is one old saying that "you get what you pay for". We believe it is the truth to honest suppliers - with a reasonable margin, the final price is determined greatly by the material.

There are great quantity of LEDs adopted for one led display, and that's the major part of all the cost. The mainstream offer of led displays are claimed with "SILAN" LED, but why the price differs so much? Here we will just use some questions to answer this question - do you know how to identify the LED chip brand? do you know how to identify the LED chip size? And do you know how to identify the encapsulation technology of the LED? do you know all the differences? 

In fact, even to the led display manufacturers, it is a very complex work to test the LED quality. Even with the tested result, sometimes we couldn't make sure of the quality level because it may perform difference in practical application. The LED vendors has always several classes LEDs to the led display manufacturers, for the same spec. And it is no doubt the practical performance would be different. And how about the "led encapsulation"? Some the led display manufacturers claim their encapsulated LEDs are very good quality and better than the bought. This saying is not worth trusting at all because led encapsulating requires higher technology than led display processing. The professional led encapsulating companies have more dedicated engineers, more experiences and more invests. As far as we have learnt, there is only one reason for the led display manufacturers to encapsulate the LEDs, that's the lower material cost.

Theoretically the MTBF (Mean time between failures) of good quality LED displays should be 5000 hours. But if the manufacturers adopt low quality material, the practical performance would be further shorter than it. Moreover, the problem would occur very frequently.

The malfunction usually happens on the LEDs, Driver IC, Power supplies, PCB, Connectors, but among all the components, the worst situation is the malfunction happens on the LEDs because it's just the light emitting component to show the image and videos. If it's a common problem of one bulk leds for the led display, there would be no way to fix the led screen.

Firstly about the bad quality LED, there's only one way for the led display manufacturers - that is to choose the good quality LED vendors. But if one manufacturer always keeps the thought of "lower and lower cost", we think it would be very dangerous, here we will not discuss further.

Sencondly about the Incorrect Usage. There are many hidden problem couldn't be inspected out. But once the LED face the statics, big current shock, the reinforce, the problem would appear. As well, bad quality LEDs performs worse in the LED chips, epoxide resins, leadframes, internal leads, Die-Attached Epoxys, PPA etc.

The different thermal expansion coefficient will easily break the bad quality LEDs.

To the GaN LEDs, the static electricity is the principal cause of the malfunction. The whole process of this malfunction is very complex. The equipments, the wares, the operators' human body, anything could have the possible statics. The static has hundreds, thousands Volt, and the time of discharge is calculated with nanosecond.

Sometimes the manufacturers find the malfunction of blue and green LEDs, that's usually caused by the statics, and the LED-PN is destroyed completely by the electrostatic discharge.

To avoid this, the most important thing is to choose good quality LEDs; as well, during all the production processes, the electrostatic protection should be executed.

Generally speaking, the full color led display is composed by great quantity of RGB LEDs. With the frequently on and off, and watching from viewing distance, the led display shows images. Currently, out of home is still the mainstreim market of led displays. And according to the industry statistical analysis, the outdoor led display takes 60% market, and we could anticipate that in near future, the full color led displays would be seen everywhere on the streets.

But what is good LED to those full color led displays? If you'd like to learn further about the quality of the full color led displays, we could start with 5 aspects of its quality and specification.

1. The malfunction rate. Since the led display is composed by huge quantity of RGB LEDs, each color LED's defection would influent the visual performance. And according to the industry experience, from the led display assembly to the 72hours ageing test, the malfunction dot rate should be not higher than 1/10000.

2. The antistatic ability. From the last pages, you'd find LEDs are very sensitive to the static. And generally speaking, to the good LEDs and under the test of "static electricity on human body", the malfunction voltage should not lower than 2000V.

3. The attenuation factor. The attenuation speed is determined by the LED chip, encapsulation material and technology. To adjust the good LED, with the current input of 20mA and 1000 hours, the attenuation of red led should be smaller than 10%, the blue and green led should be smaller than 15%. The accordance attenuation of red, green, blue color influent very much on the led display's color performance, after running for a long period.

4. The brightness. The brightness of LED is the key factor to decide the brightness of led display screen. Usually with the same current input, the higher brightness, the more stable screen. But what to be noticed is, if the brightness of LED is determined, the smaller viewing angle, the LED seem brighter; the bigger viewing angle, the LED seem darker. So we must consider both the viewing angle and the brightness. For outdoor full color led displays, usually we require 100-110 degree viewing angle, and based on that, we will need the brightness to be higher. And to the different pixel pitch, viewing distance, we will find the balance of them all.

5. The accordance. Each pixel of full color led display has the RGB LED. So each the LED's brightness, wave length's accordance determines the led display's accordance of brightness, white balance, and the chromaticity. And as the professional led display manufacturer, we require the vendors supply 5nm wavelength range, and 1:1.3 brightness range LEDs. And we would test strictly about this, to produce good quality full color led displays.

One key factor of the led display quality is the viewing angle. Here we will discuss what influence the viewing angle of led display.

As well known that when watching the led display from a small or big viewing angle, the brightness and color performance is different. For some led display screens, when watching it from a small viewing angle, it has a very good white balance; but when watching it from a big viewing angle, it performs not that good. The influence is not only in the color, but also the brightness.

In essential, it is determined by the LEDs. The LEDs for the led screens have their own viewing angle, so firstly when the RGB LEDs compose one pixel, the viewing angle of all the LEDs in one pixel should be accordant, and when all the pixels compose one led display, the viewing angle of all the pixels should be accordant. The accordance of the LEDs will directly determine the white balance of the led screens, watching from different viewing angle. To achieve the perfect accordance, the LED encapsulation lens and other materials should be designed strictly. Only the good led encapsulation companies could achieve that, with the high technology level, advanced production and test equipments.

So as the led display screen manufacturer in China, we don't think we'd get into the field of LED encapsulation, which requires very long period of experiences. After all, the division of labor is very important to produce high quality finished products. No matter which industry, no manufacturer could do all the process and materials, only the division labor of one supply chain's high efficiency could make it perfect.

As the electronic equipment, sometimes the fault happen on led displays. The fault could be the control PC side of hardware or software, also could be the screen side such as the whole led screen off, flakes on the led screen, black block, or the possible flicker. When a fault reported to us from the clients, usually we would require one picture to show what's the problem, and we will bring out the suggest and solution to our clients step by step to solve it. But sometimes, the clients with higher tech background would inspect and solve the problem on their on. And the multimeter is very frequently used.

And usually there are 4 ways to use the multimeter:
1. Turn the multimeter's gear shifting to the direct voltage. Test the line-to-earth voltage of the possible fault point, and compare it with the well working point, to test the fault.

2. Turn the multimeter's gear shifting to the short circuit. This test should be executed when the electricity off, to avoid the possible harm to the multimeter. When there is the short circuit happen, the multimeter will alert. The short circuit is one of the most frequently happen problem, sometimes it would be inspected out by watching the IC feet, or the PINS.

3. Test the voltage drop. All the driving ic of the led displays are composed essentially with many tiny units, so when there's the current flow, the voltage drop would exist. So with testing the voltage drop of each IC feet, the fault point would be inspected out.

4. Test the fault with the multimeter's resistor gear shifting, and test the resistance value of line-to-earth. With test the well working point and the possible fault point, we would find out where the problem is.

This may sound complicated to some clients, but there's no necessary to worry about that because all those are to the very tech-skilled person. As the end user, when face any problem, we'd suggest you where the problem is and swap the fault modules, psu etc with our spare parts. And after that, our client would post back the fault components to us for the repair.

With several years development, led displays are widely used in many fields. Here in this article, we'd like to generally introduce the engineering process of led displays:

1. The reconnaissance and design on early stage. This is the important premise of all the processes. The engineers of led display manufacturers must know well about the installation location, and design the led screen panel. The led display panel and structure must be compliant with the installation location.

2. The steel structure design. Usually this would be done within 3-5 days after the contract signed. The engineer should hand over the steel structure design to the project engineering organization. When the engineering organization have the CAD layer in hand, they should prepare the materials according to the layer and build the steel structure.

3. The construction and management of the electric power. Before the installation, the engineers must do the pre-planning of the electricity distribution box, according to the max power consumption of the led display. And the led display manufacturers should provide this to the engineering organization.

4. The installation of led display panel. The engineering organization knows well of the engineering of the steel structure, but may not know well about the wiring and assembly of led dislay. So this process should be under the supervisor of led display manufacturers.

5. The test of led display screen. After the engineering and installation, the technicians of led display manufacturers will test the whole system. And then power on the screen to do the control and test.

6. The maintenance. During the test process, the problem may happen. And the technicians should swap the broken components with spare ones, or do the possible repair.

7. The trainning of led display technology. This could be done during the production process of led display. Also, the technicians could offer the trainning on field. But as always, we believe the trainning should be carried out through all the communication process with our clients. Knowing more about the technology would be finally helpful much to our clients business.

When asking an offer from led display manufacturers, frequently the clients see the option of video processor which costs not little. So is the video processor necessary for led display?

To find the answer, we need to learn the function of the video processor. Simply speaking, the video processor is to covert the external signal to the signal type compliant with the led display. And during this process, the led video processor need to accomplish the steps as below:

1. The improvement of the processing depth. Now the grey level of led screen has reached 16 bits, while the input signal source are mostly 8 bits. Hence, following with the HD display times, 10 bits or even 12 bits processing technology would be adopted widely.

2. The convert of resolution spec. Most the video signal sources such as blue ray DVD, PC, HD player have the defined spec (refer to VESA, ITU, SMPTE standards), but the modular design of led screen makes the resolution any value. And the video processor is going to covert all kinds of signal resolution to the physical resolution of led display screen.

3. Zoom Scale: during the process of resolution spec convert, the image need the zoom, no matter to let it bigger of smaller, there would be complete image on the led screen.

4. Color space conversion: the colour gamut of the led display is very wide, while most the signal's color gamut is small, for example NTSC. To achieve the excellent color and image performance on the led screen, the color space conversion should be done.

5. The image process and enhance technology: the digital image process technology has been developing since 20's of 20th century. And there are a lot of patent technology such as DCDi, ACC2, ACM3D etc of Faroudja Lab. Those technology has improved greatly the visual effect of the images.

LED cabinet is the basic modular unit that clients receive to assemble the led screen panel. But the importance of led cabinet design is easily ignored.
In some clients or even the sales person's opinion, led cabinet is just a unit to housing the small led modules, power supplies, and other components. Indeed, this is the very basic function of the led display cabinet, but the led display manufacturers should consider much further than this. A good led cabinet and a bad led cabinet have almost the same outward appearance, but in the practical operation, the influence to the led screen performance is totally different.
Then, what need to be considered, when design the led cabinet?

Firstly, it should protect the led modules, power supplies, and all the internal components and devices well.

Secondly, it should ensure the safety of the operation, and it must reach the high level ingress protection, without the entry of dust and water.
Thirdly, which is the most important and easily ignored, is the design of heat loop. We say this is most important because most the manufacturers could accomplish the requirements of the above 2 items, but this item requires higher design level.

Following with the long operation time and the temperature of environment, the heat emitting would rise. If the heat couldn't be dissipated efficiently, the led screen quality would be down, and the lifetime would be short.

This sounds very easy to understand but to accomplish a good design, it's not easy at all. The led display manufacturers must pay great attention to it.
A bad designed led cabinet will not influent the led display quality immediately. For a newly installed led screen, it may seem all right. But after a period of running, all the problems will emerge. And this, is very similar with what we call "hidden problem" of led display screens.

At last, when have an RFQ, the clients find "the only difference is the price". But it's better to learn that it is very easy to show words and pictures in email, a good description doesn't mean a good quality. Sometimes, with the reasonable margin, the higher price is of the better quality product. Some the choice of the led primary color's wavelength is to achieve the good visual effect. For example the green LED. At the very beginning, the 570nm yellow green LED was widely adopted. The cost was low, but the color gamut was small, the brightness was low, and the color revivification was bad. But replacing the 570nm yellow green LED with 525nm pure yellow LED, the color gamut increased 2 times, and the color revivification improved greatly, so the visual effect of led display is much better.
